Angoulême is a small French city located 134 km or 83.8 miles from Bordeaux (well known for its great wine), about 2 hours away from Paris on the TGV train. With a “majestic eye,” it overlooks the valley of the river Charente. Normally it is a very historic and tranquil city but every January, this city gets a little crazy because of the International Festival of Comics. During this period, the entire city is filled with comics; even in the pharmacies, shoe stores, coffee shops, you can find comics everywhere. This festival is considered one of the most prestigious festivals for comics in Europe. In France, Bande Dessinée (BD) - comics in French - is a part of its culture, just like what manga does to the Japanese. These days, manga has been starting to be recognized as a new comic phenomenon in France. In fact, some Japanese artists have started to win some prizes, such as 20th Century Boy by Naoki Urasawa which has won the Best Comic Series Award in this festival in 2004.
This year, Death Note was selected for its Official Selection. Although the grand prix went to another comic, it is still very honorable to be selected among incredible talented works.
Another highlight of this festival was that the artist of Bo Bo Bo-Bo Bo-Bo Bo, Mr. Yoshio Sawai was invited. He conducted several autograph sessions and interviews with press. He was a very sweet man. After he came back to Paris, he and his wife visited our new office. He was kind enough to give us his autograph with his original illustration. We were happy to give them some assistance on his visit. We hope they had a good time in France and we hope to see them again some day.
